“Technology is having a growing and irreversible impact on the automotive sector, with new advances being introduced at a rapid pace,” said Brian Moody, Editor-in-Chief of Autotrader. “An industry that was once primarily driven by mechanics is now one that is primarily driven by technology and virtual environments. The tech capabilities of new vehicles are an important differentiator between different automakers, and tech offerings can be a deal maker or breaker when consumers consider certain new models. ” Car buyers now expect more and more advanced technical functions, even in cheap to medium-priced cars. “

Autotrader’s Best New Automotive Technology for 2022 is listed below (in alphabetical order / unranked):

Best new automotive technology for 2022

Android automotive operating system
The electric Polestar 2 is the first car to use the new Android Automotive OS. Not to be confused with Android Auto, this new operating system is a system developed by Google and is open to third-party developers. It has integrated Google apps like Google Maps for navigation and the Google Assistant. Just say “Ok Google” to start voice commands and the Google Assistant can help you with music, maps, air conditioning, and more. If you don’t have an Android phone, don’t worry – this system has Apple CarPlay wireless too.

Electric pickup trucks
While electric pickup trucks have been on the horizon for some time, they are more realistic today than ever. Some of them are still in the concept phase – like the Tesla Cybertruck and a Nissan Concept pickup – but the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T will both ship in 2022 and 2021. Electric pickups have some big advantages over more traditional gas-powered trucks, including the fact that the electric torque translates into formidable skill and exhilarating performance. Some clever features are available, like Ford Intelligent Backup Power, which allows you to use the Ford F-150 Lightning as a generator.

EV box motors
Hot rodders have long used box motors to incorporate a modern engine into a project car or racing car, but now the box motor scene is being shaken up by the availability of electric box motors like the Chevrolet Performance eCrate and Ford Performance Eluminator. It’s not just long-established brands – new startups like Electric GT and reVolt have specialized in this niche market. EV box motors can be used in your vehicle restoration project to add extra power to your Tesla, or for almost any other application you can think of.

Ford BlueCruise
BlueCruise is Ford’s rival for the GM Super Cruise system. If you’re driving on a Ford-mapped highway, BlueCruise can take over and you can take your hands off the steering wheel and your feet off the pedals. However, it’s not entirely automated – you still have to stay vigilant behind the wheel and keep your eyes on the road, even if it makes driving on the motorway safer and more relaxed. The Ford BlueCruise hands-free system is available in the 2022 Ford F-150 and the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E. For other eligible Ford vehicles, an over-the-air update with BlueCruise will be released in the first quarter of 2022.

High-end equipment
While the customization of trucks and vans is nothing new, it has been getting crazier and higher quality lately. A popular trend in the interior design world is overlanding, which is essentially off-road for long periods of time. Tailor-made fittings make it easy to overland with upgrades like gear-loaded roof racks, built-in tents and, in extreme cases, bespoke vans, built-in beds and equipment to make it an all-terrain motorhome. When it comes to individual equipment, the limits are as high as your budget and your imagination.

Smartphone as a digital car key
For many years, motorists have had the ability to remotely control or monitor some aspects of their car, with functions such as locking / unlocking their car or remote starting. The 2.0 version of this technology simply uses a smartphone as a key to the entire car. While Apple and BMW are currently offering this technology along with Mercedes-Benz, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and a few others, more and more affordable vehicles are now offering this feature. Hyundai is offering it on the Sonata and other models for Android users, but we suspect that the offering will grow to other platforms and models over time. The concept is simple – all you need is your smartphone to gain access, start and drive the car, and lock and unlock your car. You can also virtually share your car key with someone else, like a virtual valet key.

Interactive Jeep passenger display
An interactive passenger display is a newly available feature in high-end Jeep models such as the Grand Wagoneer. It’s a 10.25-inch screen above the glove box that gives the passenger a variety of ways to enjoy the ride. It can give passengers GPS coordinates, control of the audio and rear seat entertainment systems, and even a glimpse of the vehicle’s cameras. Jeep models are becoming more and more luxurious and high-tech without sacrificing off-road capabilities. This is another step in turning high-end Jeeps into true luxury SUVs that can compete with Land Rover.

LED lighting for classic cars
LED lighting is a great way to make a classic car a little more modern – not only does it improve the look of the vehicle, but it also dramatically improves its visibility. Upgrading to HID headlights is a little tricky because it requires transformers and additional wiring. However, upgrading to LED is a simple plug and play process as they don’t use a lot of watts. This has become such a popular upgrade that some online retailers have specialized in it. Sites like Dapper Lighting and Vintage Car LEDs can sell you LED lighting designed for your classic car, so this is not an obvious modification.

2022 clear air
While naysayers once dismissed it as “vaporware”, the Lucid Air has finally hit production. This luxury electric sedan is a serious competitor to the Tesla Model S, the Porsche Taycan, and the Audi e-Tron GT. On paper, the Lucid Air beats the Tesla Model S in terms of range and performance on its own, producing up to 1,111 hp with a maximum range of a whopping 850 miles. With a starting EIA below $ 80,000Also, it is relatively inexpensive when compared to its competitors. In addition to its exciting electric powertrain, the Lucid Air has a luxurious interior with high-tech features like a 34-inch, 5K Glass cockpit display, over-the-air updates, the DreamDrive suite of driver assistance functions, an elegant mobile app and more.

Nissan VC turbo engines
Gasoline engines are getting cleaner and more efficient. Nissan’s innovative variable-compression turbo engines have been used in the Nissan Altima and Infiniti Q50 for a number of years. Now Nissan has just introduced a new version of the VC turbo as the base engine of the popular Nissan Rogue. It is the first 3-cylinder VC turbo engine with 20 hp more, 44 Nm of torque and a combined mpg improvement of three compared to the previous engine of the Rogue. The sophisticated engineering of this engine changes the compression ratio while driving, which means it improves performance when hitting and optimizes efficiency when driving on the highway. The result is a well-balanced, fuel-efficient engine that we hope to see in other Nissan models soon.
