That effort is part of the Initiative for vaccination cards, a group of private and public organizations such as Microsoft, Salesforce, Oracle and the Mayo Clinic, with the aim of producing trustworthy and verifiable evidence of vaccination.
As more companies introduce vaccination regulations for customers and employers, the durability of the paper cards issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention remains in question. The SMART Health Card is a safer option and is therefore being rolled out across the United States.
“We have won most of the major healthcare technology providers in the country,” said JP Pollak, co-founder of The Commons Project, one of the organizations involved in the VCI consortium said that Boston Globe. “We have most of the major pharmacy chains, all of the major healthcare systems. Several states have agreed to adopt this special standard. “
However, this technology is not currently used in Massachusetts because the state Department of Health has not yet announced whether it will offer residents a way to prove vaccination status beyond paper cards. However, those who have been vaccinated at CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart may be able to use the SMART Health Card as these companies participate.
Other states such as New York, California and Louisiana have already started implementing the SMART system. Other participating countries will be announced. Pollak told the Globe that he expects SMART Health Cards to be available to approximately 100 million US citizens in about a month.
The SMART system works using a QR code that can be accessed on a smartphone or printed out on paper. When the code is accessed, the name, date of birth and vaccination information will appear on the screen. Other medical information is not displayed. This code is also digitally signed to ensure that the card was legitimately issued from a verified location to prevent counterfeiting.
People using the SMART Health Card will also need to show another form of ID to verify their identity.
For example, UMass memorial announced on Wednesday that they plan to introduce an employee vaccine mandate for the call. On the same day, Governor Charlie Baker said the COVID-19 vaccine will be mandatory for employees from Long-term care facilities.
Other companies like Jacques cabaret in Boston require guests who wish to remove their masks inside to provide proof of vaccination.
SMART Health Card would make vaccination enforcement a lot easier.
