TOWN OF BRUNSWICK, Wisconsin (WEAU) – The Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources is offering free well water screening at Farm Technology Days in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, July 20 through July 22.
The DNR says participants in the event can have their water checked for nitrate, which is the number one pollutant affecting health in Wisconsin. Demonstrations will be offered at the event, and the results will be available after a few minutes.
“Almost one in ten private wells in Wisconsin can contain high levels of nitrates,” said Marty Nessman, director of DNR’s Private Water Supply Section. “Areas of the state with a higher intensity of agriculture or sewage treatment plants generally have more problems with nitrate in well water at worrying levels.
“Areas with sandy soils or broken bedrock near the surface can also make areas more prone to groundwater pollution,” said Nessman.
Participants can bring a cup of well water in a clean container Booth 587 at the Farm Technology Dayswhich takes place at Huntsinger Farms on Highway 37 southwest of Eau Claire in the city of Brunswick.
DNR staff are available to answer questions and may recommend additional testing if elevated nitrate levels are found.
The DNR says that infants and pregnant women should not drink water with a nitrate-nitrogen content of more than 10 mg / l.
