Paramedics at the field hospital run outside to respond to the soldier holding their military working dog and falling out of the Humvee. The dog is bleeding from a missing limb while the handler yells for someone to save their mate’s life. The injured dog is put on a litter and taken to the field hospital, closely followed by the dog handler.
The handler grips the controller for the animatronic dog while operating the training aid as part of a scenario in Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.
Sgt. 1st Class Kristina Boettcher, the non-commissioned officer for the Effects and Enablers (E&E) for Global Medic under the direction of the 78th Training Division as part of the Combat Support Training Exercise (CSTX), is an experienced actor in training scenarios, including a dog handler.
Nicknamed “Diesel”, the animatronic dog in question is used to subject soldiers to medical care for dogs. The E&E uses modern technologies such as “Diesel” to enable more effective and realistic training for US Army Reserve soldiers.
U.S. Army Reserves in E&E are preparing for many medical training events, including mass causality scenarios, medical evacuations, and ambulance arrivals.
The mass causality event included live roleplayers with prosthetic wounds and fake blood, as well as dolls, synthetic human figures used for medical or scientific training purposes, with missing limbs, burns and head injuries. New training models are accompanied by a controller that controls the bleeding, the pulse and the movements of the training models.
“When I was through [combat medic] We never had this opportunity at school, ”explains Boettcher. “The progress the Army has made in providing these types of products is astronomical and I just hope they continue down the simulation path.”
Boettcher, from the 7306th Medical Exercise Support Battalion, plays roles as Diesel’s handler for the training exercises. An important part of caring for an injured military dog is not to separate the dog from its handler.
“I am really enjoying it [role playing with] the dog, because when you are the handler you have the ability to connect emotionally with the dog, ”says Boettcher. “Even if it’s a robot, you can connect emotionally.”
Michael Roth, simulation technician and trainer at the regional training location medicine, explains how the improved technology changes the soldiers’ reactions to their puppets.
“As simple as it sounds, a noise completely changes the dynamics in the hospital,” says Roth. “It really gives people the feeling that this is not just a piece of plastic when it really is.”
Diesel’s ability to pant, bark, growl, and whine gives soldiers the most realistic training, especially for those not used to seeing a dog in the hospital. Diesel can also have various injuries, including a gunshot wound and a missing limb.
Human dolls are also becoming increasingly versatile, with interchangeable legs, wounds, and internal injuries. Versatility ensures that soldiers do not get used to certain injuries and are always on their guard, says Boettcher.
Global Medic is part of the Army Reserve Medical Command’s larger mission to provide trained, equipped, and combat-ready units and medical personnel now ready to support the entire force on the battlefields of today and tomorrow.
“We want the training to be as realistic as possible because it appeals to the training audience,” said Boettcher. “We do a lot of wound coaching here. We explain to the live roleplayers how you would react to a certain injury or how you would present your illnesses even though they are not real. “
The scenario on August 14, 2021 is a C130 that crashed after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Boettcher prepared live roleplayers and multiple amputation trauma trainers (MATTs) on the Young Army Air Strip, waiting for the arrival of medical evacuations from Blackhawk helicopters and ambulances.
“We’re trying to get it to the point where they treat their soldiers like soldiers and not just like a doll,” said Roth. “We don’t want to make it easy for people [medics] to do their job, because in real life their job is not easy. ”
