Technology has become a measure of a nation’s standing like never before, and democracies in particular face some unique challenges that arise from it, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said today.
In a virtual address at the Global Technology Summit 2021, Mr. Jaishankar said that mastering the key domains of technology has now become an expression of power and influence in a globalized and technology-driven world.
“Technology has always been a double-edged sword. It has opened new perspectives for progress, just as it has helped create greater vulnerabilities and threats.
Mr. Jaishankar said technology has determined the beliefs of nations and increased the prospects of some, often at the expense of others.
“In a world that is more globalized and technology-driven, mastering key domains is an expression of power and influence. In fact, technology is now more than ever a metric for measuring a nation’s standing, ”he said.
Mr. Jaishankar said the impact of technology on societies is no less transformative.
“It’s an important governance tool that can determine the quality of delivery. It is also an exceptionally effective communication medium that can change the nature of politics. Democracies in particular face some unique challenges arising from technology, ”he said.
However, Mr. Jaishankar did not address the challenges.
The Global Technology Summit is the flagship geotechnology event that has been held annually since 2016.
It is jointly organized by Carnegie India and the Department of State with an emphasis on the political aspects of trending technology issues.
