5G technology will be critical to the automotive industry, especially as more autonomous vehicles permeate the streets. The 5G NR infrastructure will be able to deliver the promised 5G data speeds and latency times. However, 5G NR will depend on 3GPP Release 16 and 17 guidelines, and MNOs are currently mitigating legal, operational and environmental issues and challenges in building NR base stations.

It will take another 4 to 5 years for the 5G NR cell towers and base stations to be placed worldwide. The use of consortia (e.g. 5GAA) for 5G for V2X services is the biggest impact of 5G on the automotive industry. 5G’s V2X security-based use cases will largely depend on future regulations, intense R&D testing, and availability of infrastructure, and are expected to be commercialized in the industry after 2025.

Some of the growth opportunities identified in this study are detailed below:

  • The stand-alone operation of L4 vehicles does not require 5G network connectivity. However, driving two or more L4 vehicles safely on freeways and roads requires the 5G NR infrastructure to regularly transmit data between L4 vehicles and support safe driving coordination.

  • The effective use of the edge cloud and the 5G-NR infrastructure will support the futuristic provision of C-V2X services and smart city and traffic-related use cases.

  • mmWave tapes will be vital for advanced 5G use cases and deployments going forward. However, they are not widely used by MNOs due to problems with poor signal coverage.
