New technology arrives at SLO Airport in time for holidays

Travelers flying in or out of the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport can see some new technology in action.

In time for the influx of travelers on vacation, the airport is introducing a new method that can speed up the check-in process.

The TSA expects travel volumes to reach around 90% pre-pandemic levels by Christmas this year, and travelers may not need to bring a boarding pass to the airport this year.

The new technology is called Credential Authentication Technology or CAT. It enables passengers to board only with their ID.

“You don’t have to show a boarding pass,” Lorie Dankers, a TSA spokeswoman, told KSBY. “Only your ID is sufficient. The officer will scan it and get all the information necessary to let you through the security checkpoint.”

TSA approved Forms of identification Driver’s license, passport or passport included.

To confirm identity, TSA agents will ask passengers to pull their masks off briefly.

“We think it won’t affect your health in any way,” said Dankers. “But again, bring a mask that is easy to remove so that you can do this quickly. Now remember, if you are not wearing a mask, you will be offered a mask. If you refuse to wear this mask, you will be refused entry to the security checkpoint and risk a civil sanction. “

There are two CAT units at San Luis Obispo Airport. Officials say this will be the number one way for travelers to check-in flights.

“This technology is also ideal for identifying forged ID cards – those that do not have the necessary security functions,” said Dankers. “It is able to indicate this to the officer for the appropriate follow-up. This is important because we have to make sure that travelers are who they say they are when they come to the security checkpoint. “

Officials say there are exceptions when it comes to technology.

“You don’t need to show photo ID if you’re 18 or younger,” said Dankers. “So you still have to bring your boarding pass to security.”

The TSA says the busiest travel days are Friday, December 17, Wednesday, December 22, and Thursday, December 23.
