Orbital Marine Power’s tidal turbine technology has won the iF Design Awards announced today.
The successful technology was developed through a strategic design partnership with Designworks, the BMW Group’s innovation studio and global creative consultancy.
The awards, which received almost 10,000 entries from 60 countries in 2020, identified the collaboration between Orbital and Designworks as a successful design in the Professional Concept category.
Orbital and Designworks announced their design partnership last year when they released concept images of Orbital’s floating power generation technology, including the supply-scale Orbital OA model and a smaller Riverkinetic model.
The vision for the OA model is for turbines to look less like traditional ships and more like autonomous power generation fleets in the future, Orbital said.
Andrew Scott, Orbital CEO, said, “As a pioneering energy company committed to turning the tide on climate change, it is of tremendous importance for us to create a vision and related excitement. That is why we have integrated Designworks into a partnership.
“It is a real honor to have the results of this exercise recognized in the iF Design Forum.”
Laura Robin, Director of Designworks LA Studio, said, “The honor to share this iF Design Award 2021 with Orbital Marine Power is a great achievement.
“This global recognition recognizes the importance of design in envisioning our best future.
“And what could be nicer than working with a company that noticeably demonstrates new forms of clean energy and brings about significant changes for people and the planet.”
The iF Design Awards are a global symbol of design excellence that aims to identify, support and promote good design, especially well-designed industrial products.
