Province adds funding for Western Development Museum technology upgrades

The province is providing additional funding to the museum to expand Wi-Fi connectivity, upgrade IT equipment, and improve the visitor experience

The province is providing additional funding to the museum to expand Wi-Fi connectivity, upgrade IT equipment, and improve the visitor experience.

Joan Kanigan, CEO of the Western Development Museum (WDM) said, “This funding will go a long way in filling a significant technology gap at WDM Moose Jaw and WDM Saskatoon.”

The Western Development Museum website states that the WDM is the largest museum of human history in Saskatchewan. WDM Moose Jaw’s location focuses on the history of transportation in Saskatchewan, including exhibits such as a CF-SAM aircraft that pioneered the world’s first non-military, state-run air ambulance service.

“The improvements to our Wi-Fi connectivity and the ability to stream tours and programs live will benefit visitors, students and educators across the province,” said Kanigan. “We are very grateful for the support we have received from the Saskatchewan government through the Department of Parks, Culture and Sports.”

The WDM has adapted to the pandemic by offering online programs, including a course for students in grades 10-12. The course is titled “Think Like a Historian” and focuses on sources of information used to compare the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic to the modern COVID-19 pandemic.

Laura Ross, Minister for Parks, Culture and Sports, said: “The government is pleased to provide additional funding to the Western Development Museum. This investment will enable the museum to acquire the technology, equipment, and internet bandwidth needed to improve services and interact with communities across Saskatchewan. “

The following upgrades will be completed in fiscal year 2021/22:

• Improvements to Wi-Fi access points
• Enhancements to live streaming devices and interactive video conferencing
• Interactive whiteboards, portable stands, and other related devices

Another focus of funding will be the modernization of meeting rooms and rental space at WDM locations.
