Videon announces its inclusion in Akamai’s Media Technology Program and the EdgeCaster Encoder Passing Akamai MSL 4.x Qualification Testing

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., April 21, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Videon is proud to announce its inclusion in the Akamai Media Technology Partner Program with the offering of EdgeCaster, a 4K30 HEVC / H.264 encoder that supports low-latency HTTP streaming. In addition to being a member of the Media Technology Partner Program, Videon is proud to announce that EdgeCaster has earned qualification as an Akamai MSL 4.x Qualified Encoder. Streaming customers can now use Videon’s EdgeCaster with Akamai’s Media Services Live 4 as a direct capture from EdgeCaster to support HLS and DASH workflows with ultra-low latency and CMAF support for chunked transfer. In addition, Videon’s EdgeCaster supports multiple bit rate representations so that no costly and time-consuming cloud transcodes / transrations are required. After Videon’s EdgeCaster is qualified for Akamai, Videon customers can stream directly to Akamai, a feature that unqualified encoders cannot provide.

To become an Akamai MSL 4.x qualified encoder, EdgeCaster had to go through Akamai’s rigorous live encoder qualification test process. During this process, the Videon team worked directly with Akamai to meet the qualification test standards. The Videon team was able to answer any questions that came up during the tests. This resulted in Videon’s Akamai MSL 4.x qualification based on an HLS, DASH, and CMAF ingestion method.

Videon has pushed the qualification even further and also achieved the status of a media technology partner. This level of integration with Akamai ensures that key features such as CMAF and HTTP are available with EdgeCaster. The result is a solution that confirms Akamai’s stringent streaming quality requirements and the assurance of having a consistent streaming methodology across all qualified encoders to give customers the best possible experience with the lowest possible risk.

“Akamai is the gold standard for quality and delivery of streaming video. Videon’s goal was to qualify our EdgeCaster encoder for Akamai’s rigorous standards while also reaching the next level to be accepted as a Media Technology Partner,” said Todd Erdley, CEO and founder of Videon. “We’re grateful for Akamai’s support in this process and we’re excited to give Akamai customers the opportunity to safely use Videon’s EdgeCaster encoder to support low-latency workflow applications.”

“We are excited to add EdgeCaster to Akamai’s list of qualified encoders, and we welcome Videon, who as a media technology partner has demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation in ultra-low latency streaming and CMAF workflows,” he said Jon Alexander, Senior Director, Media Product Management, Akamai. “EdgeCaster’s availability as a qualified encoder gives customers even more flexibility in choosing the technology that best fits their streaming workflows and the confidence that the encoder has passed a rigorous evaluation for compatibility with Media Services Live – Ensure Akamai’s deployment solution. “
