Xiaomi unveiled its next generation heat dissipation technology, Loop LiquidCool technology, which was inspired by industries such as aerospace. Loop LiquidCool technology uses an effect known as the “capillary effect” in which a liquid coolant is drawn in and released directly to the heat source, the liquid evaporates, and then the heat is directed into a cooler section, causing the coolant to condense and the excess in “a unidirectional closed loop channel”. Xiaomi’s new technology produces up to twice as much cooling capacity and is also touted as being extremely efficient for cooling smartphones. The new Loop LiquidCool technology is expected to appear around the second half of 2022.
Loop LiquidCool technology
This new technology has an annular heat pipe system consisting of an evaporator, a condenser, a refill chamber, and gas and liquid pipes. Placed near heat sources, the evaporator has refrigerant that evaporates into gas when the smartphone is busy. The gas and air flow is then diffused to the condenser, where the gas condenses back into liquid. These liquids are absorbed and collected by tiny fibers in the refill chamber – which refills the vaporizer – making it a self-sufficient system.
Since Xiaomi uses a similar VC liquid cooling process, the unique form factor is the biggest difference in terms of efficiency. Standard VC systems do not offer individual channels for liquids and gases. In fact, high temperatures for gases and low temperatures for liquids contradict each other under extreme workloads. The company’s latest pump design features an “annular pump” that “has a special gas tube design” that reduces air resistance passage by up to 30%, but has a “maximum heat transfer capacity” of up to a full 100%.
Disposable circulation is the key to heat dissipation
To ensure highly efficient one-way circulation, the implementation of a Tesla valve structure in the refill chamber is critical. A Tesla valve is a one-way valve that allows liquid to flow through the vaporizer while preventing gases from moving in the wrong direction. This enables a higher efficiency of the gas / liquid circulation in the whole system.
Thanks to the Tesla valve’s one-way circulation, gas-liquid separation and gas lines with low heat resistance, the flexible form factor also enables the Loop LiquidCool technology to be incorporated and stacked in any type of interior design.
